The 5th running of the Irish Derby was held on Wednesday 29th June 1870 over 1 mile 6 furlongs and 12 yards of The Curragh. There were 21 subscribers at 15 sovereigns each, with 100 sovereigns added. The winner was owned by Mr Patrick Keary, trained by Thomas Connolly and ridden by William Canavan. The winner, bred in Ireland by the Palmerstown Association, won by a length, with 2 lengths back to the third.

OWNER PROFILE
Paddy Keary was one of the earliest bookmakers in Ireland. He lived at Herbertstown House in Naas and was the owner of an extensive stable of racehorses which were trained for him at Curragh View by Thomas Connolly.
