The 5th running of the Irish Derby was held on Wednesday 29th June 1870 over 1 mile 6 furlongs and 12 yards of The Curragh. There were 21 subscribers at 15 sovereigns each, with 100 sovereigns added. The winner was owned by Mr Patrick Keary, trained by Thomas Connolly and ridden by William Canavan. The winner, bred in Ireland by the Palmerstown Association, won by a length, with 2 lengths back to the third. |
